Chicken feeders, why goats fight, and chèvre recipe

Published 18 days ago • 2 min read

Hello Reader,

Are you interested in raising white chickens? The pros and cons of raising them are likely stronger than for any other color or pattern. Check out our blog post: '12 White Chicken Breeds to Add to Your Flock.'

How about chicken feeders? Do you think they are just an unnecessary expense? Actually, they're superior to alternatives like an old tuna fish can or a discarded dog dish. These makeshift options often lead to wasted feed as chickens walk through them, flip over the dish, and even poop in it. Let’s explore better feeding options for your chickens in our new blog post.

If sheep are on your wish list for this spring, be sure to check out my Beginner's Guide to Sheep. In this post, I talked about differences between breeds and which breeds I prefer, sheep care basics, health, feeding, breeding, and much more to help you get started with raising sheep!

It can be difficult to understand why goats can be so mean to each other -- and it's scary to watch! If you've faced this issue and worried about your goats getting hurt, check out my post about goats fighting.

Goat Necropsy

Whenever a goat dies, we always want to know why. But the only way to know for sure is to get a necropsy, and that’s what we’re talking about in this episode.

Dr. Jonathan Samuelson, Clinical Assistant Professor of Anatomic Pathology in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, talks about what a necropsy is, what it can tell us, and what it can’t.

Beet Pulp for Goats? Yes or no?

You may have heard that some people feed beet pulp to their goats, and you're wondering if you should too! But what is beet pulp? Is it really good for goats?

Chévre Recipe

Chèvre is that soft goat cheese that most people generically call “goat cheese.” It is a delicious snack or appetizer spread on crackers or bread, and it makes a scrumptious sandwich when paired with grilled mushrooms and peppers. This recipe uses a direct set starter, making the process so simple that a 5-year-old could do it.

On the homestead and in my life...

Vivian finally gave birth last week, which was a week later than expected, but my goats have taught me that they give birth when they're supposed to. When day 150 came and went with no signs of labor, I started looking at how my breeding records could have been wrong. As it turned out, she didn't get pregnant when we set her up with a boyfriend. Instead, she got pregnant six days later when a buck broke into the doe pen. She gave birth to healthy buck-doe twins!

Happy homesteading!
