Arapawa goats, blue egg-laying chickens, and queso blanco

Published about 1 month ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

How many kids can a doe feed? This is one of the most common questions I get from people when they hear that one of our goats has given birth to four or five kids. Just because your doe gave birth to five kids does not mean she can feed them.

Blue eggs may not be as common as brown or white eggs, but they certainly add a unique touch to any egg carton. While most people are familiar with brown and white eggs, blue eggs are more elusive. In this article, we will explore some of the different breeds of blue egg-laying chickens, including their unique characteristics and egg-laying habits.

Interested in raising turkeys? Here are some of my tips for brooding and raising them. Raising turkeys is similar to raising chickens, but there are a few differences. And I love eating my homegrown turkey, by the way!

Are you ready to start your first garden? Or maybe you tried to start a garden in the past, and it was a sad failure? Do you think you have to have a green thumb to garden? Fear not! You can garden! No green thumb required! Check out my post - A Beginner's Guide to Gardening.

Arapawa Goats

If you’ve been looking for a smaller breed of goat that’s parasite resistant, has excellent mothering skills, and comes in a variety of colors, the Arapawa goat from New Zealand might be a good fit, especially if you are interested in conserving rare breeds.

In this episode, we are joined by Emily Nyman, Arapawa Goat Breeders Association President and Livestock Coordinator at Conner Prairie in Indiana, a living history farm museum that has a herd of Arapawa.

Queso Blanco

Queso Blanco is a traditional Mexican cheese that is perfect for beginning cheesemakers since it doesn't require any special equipment or ingredients. There are many different ways it can be used. Add it to a pasta dish, use it in Indian dishes that call for panir, in place of tofu in recipes, or as an appetizer with French bread and fresh pesto.

On the homestead and in my life...

Our first doe hits day 145 on April 1, so we are cleaning up the kidding barn to get ready. Nigerian dwarf goats usually give birth between day 145 and day 150, and we have three does that will probably kid within the first nine days of April. In the meantime, Mike is still working on repiping our house.

Happy homesteading!
